A new iPad 2 in the house!

I was so excited yesterday to pick up my brand new iPad 2 from the school office:

…very rarely am I alone when I get to open exciting packages like this…

…I was surprised that it was white (should I have been?). It’s so Mac-like!

…I have no idea how to work it…

…so I take it home and work it out there 🙂

And the verdict, so far…

What is great about the iPad:

  • I can make it work by touching the screen; like my phone, but the screen is BIG! It makes such a difference.
  • I’ve got wireless and 3G but so far it has just been running on wireless through my home connection.  At lightning speed.  So awesome.
  • Checking my Tumblr stream…the pictures are massive and it looks so good.
  • Using Muro on Deviantart.com to draw. Wow!  Tablets ROCK!
  • The iView app (recent ABC shows anytime)
  • (oh. my. god. I can’t believe I haven’t tried making a collage in polyvore yet!!!)

What is weird about the iPad:

  • Where is Word?
  • Where do I save my files?
  • Why can’t I upload the pictures I take with it?
  • Why doesn’t Facebook have an official app?

Lucky you! How exciting! This gave me an excuse to look around your blog. Haven’t been here a while. Very impressive. Notice you have inanimate Alice. What do you think of it. Tried it our on my girls. Looking for something to help reinvigorate the yr 8 literacy class, even though I don’t teach them anymore, now that I am HAT!

I feel like the luckiest girl in the world with all of these new toys, I must say! All my Christmases at once and all that.
Do you have a copy of the Inanimate Alice Education Pack? I’ll email you the copy I have, but I’m quite sure that a new version is either in the works or out so best to check here:

I would love to learn more about your role as HAT. Would you like to do a guest post for my blog?

This is odd – husband was just spruiking the benefits an iPad for himself only yesterday. He thinks it would be easier in meetings to just whip out your iPad, as opposed to opening up a laptop (sooooo tedious).

ooh, I’m not sure about that.
I mean, granted, I’m not a ‘Mac person’. And I haven’t really tried that hard to find out how I can get a word processor of some description on here. Buuuut…I have to admit I’m also a bit embarassed to have to be asking questions like that. Shouldn’t it be obvious? Why is this computer making me feel like a noob?
      Where’s Word?
Am I supposed to used this ‘Notes’ thingy? Good for emailing notes to myself I guess.
      Is there a Onenote App?

Tell me Katie, are you a Mac person?

      Having said that…
      My iPad rocks!
I’m just not sure it belongs in my meetings 😉

Yeah, Kel, I’m a Mac person (had my MacBook for 5+ years, no turning back!), and so an iPhone was naturally my only choice.

Your desktop (Padtop? Tablet-top?) looks like a cross between the two. Confusing!

The only problem I have with my Mac in regards to teaching is that it isn’t compatible with the IWB software.

Ooh – old books, new books and an iPad. What a fun weekend you must be having. Apple’s wp is Pages, part of the iWork suite which I think is $9.99 for the iPad. It opens and saves as a word doc. It’s ok. Actually it’s great when used in connection with Safari, iphoto and other mac media. The suite comes with Keynote, which I think is more useful than Powerpoint. You can get Word for mac, but there doesn’t seem to be an iPad version yet. Of course you can open docs using Dropbox, but no editing. Have fun!

Thanks so much – that is excellent advice!
      Pages…I believe I shall try you…
